Terms of Service

Thank you for using swelog! It is a small open source tool, built to help you keep a record of your own work. Because we do not know everyone who uses it, we have to put some terms in place.

When we say “swelog”, “we”, “our”, or “us”, we mean the swelog-cli project and its maintainers. When we say “you”, we mean the person using it.

We may update these Terms in the future. The full history of changes is in the project repository. Whenever we make a significant change, we will refresh the date at the top of this page. By continuing to use swelog, you agree to the latest Terms. These Terms contain a limitation of our liability.

What swelog is

Swelog is a command-line program that runs entirely on your own computer under the MIT License. That license governs your right to use, copy, modify, and redistribute the software, and nothing in these Terms takes away a right the MIT License grants you.

There is no swelog account, no hosted service, and no subscription. We do not operate servers that hold your data, and we do not charge for anything. See the Privacy Policy for what this means for your data.

Your responsibilities

1. You are responsible for the security of your own computer, your Obsidian vault, and the credentials you give swelog. We cannot and will not be liable for any loss or damage arising from a failure to keep those secure.
2. You are responsible for the content you write into your notes and for whatever swelog then does with it at your instruction, including sending it to a language model provider.
3. You must have the right to access any account you connect to swelog, and to read the data you ask it to fetch. Do not use swelog to reach a calendar, repository, or issue tracker you are not authorized to read.
4. You may not use swelog to break the law, or to violate the terms of any service it connects to on your behalf.

Third-party services

Swelog connects to services we do not control: GitHub, Linear, Google Calendar, OpenAI, OpenRouter, and the npm registry. Your use of each is governed by that provider’s own terms and privacy policy, which you accept directly with them and not with us.

We are not liable or accountable for those services. If one changes its API, restricts your account, rate-limits you, revokes your credentials, or shuts down, the corresponding swelog feature may stop working, and that is outside our control.

Connecting a service is always your choice. Swelog contacts a provider only when you run the command that uses it, except for the daily version check described in the Privacy Policy.

Your content

Your notes, logs, and configuration are yours. We claim no ownership over anything you write, and we obtain no license to it — we never receive it in the first place.

Features and bugs

Swelog is designed with care, but there is no such thing as a tool that pleases everybody. We make no guarantee that it will meet your specific requirements or expectations.

As with any software, swelog has bugs. We track the ones reported to us and work through the important ones, especially anything touching security or your data. Not every reported bug will be fixed, and we do not guarantee error-free operation. Please report anything you find by opening an issue.

Swelog writes to files in your vault. It is your responsibility to keep backups of anything you care about. Integration sections such as ## GitHub and ## Google Calendar are overwritten wholesale on every fetch, as described in Integrations.

Modifications to swelog

We reserve the right at any time to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, any part of swelog, with or without notice. Because swelog is open source and runs locally, a version you already have installed keeps working regardless of what we do next, and you are free to fork it.

Warranty and liability

Swelog is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and noninfringement. Your use of swelog is at your sole risk.

You expressly understand and agree that we shall not be liable, in law or in equity, to you or to any third party for any direct, indirect, incidental, lost profits, special, consequential, punitive, or exemplary damages, including but not limited to damages for loss of profits, goodwill, use, data, or other intangible losses (even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages), resulting from: (i) the use or the inability to use swelog; (ii) the cost of procurement of substitute goods and services; (iii) unauthorized access to or alteration of your data; (iv) statements or conduct of any third-party service; or (v) any other matter relating to these Terms or to swelog, whether as a breach of contract, tort (including negligence, whether active or passive), or any other theory of liability.

In other words: choosing to use swelog means making a bet on it. If the bet does not work out, that is on you, not us. Keep backups of your vault.
